Obituary For Monkey Hazelwood
Monkey was a feral cat who showed up in my backyard a few weeks after losing one of my cats to cancer. It took him several months to let me pet him, but once he did, it was like a switch flipped, and he began running towards me any time I called him to get pets. When I trapped him to have him neutered, I already knew I wouldn’t be releasing him, and when I found out he was FIV+, that sealed the deal.
It took a while to get him out of his shell once I brought him inside, but once I did, he was the goofiest, sweetest, and most loving boy. He accepted and loved my other cat Scout from day one - they were truly like brothers. He helped Scout heal from losing his brother as much as he helped me. Monkey loved and trusted me unconditionally, but only me. I was definitely HIS person.
There’s something I can’t quite explain about the bond formed with a feral cat. Monkey was ALWAYS begging for food, quite mischievous, a frequent thief of food (rotisserie chicken and bread were his favorites), and he definitely stole my heart.
I had to say goodbye to Monkey due to complications from FIV, which was awful and heartbreaking, but a small price to pay for the too short 7 years of joy he brought to my life.
RIP my sweet nugget.
