If you are lucky at least once in life, a dog comes home with you, steals your heart, and changes the complexion of your lives. He is there as you grow and change, as you laugh, as you suffer, when you're sick, when you achieve your dreams. He becomes, in so many ways, an ever-present feature of your everyday, your travels, your life; a living example of how you should live present in each and every moment. For us, for fourteen great and important years, that was Rex. That 10-week-old puppy who I will always be convinced chose us that day at the shelter – not the other way around. A dog who, when he knew he had finished his job to shepherd us to the next phase of our lives, was content to give up on his failing body knowing that he was, and always would be, loved like no other.
