Choosing a Pet Urn February 26, 2014

As you cope with the loss of a pet, it is important to consider how you wish to remember your pet. For owners who choose pet cremation, the selection of the right pet urn is a crucial element of the grieving process.

What to Consider When Choosing a Pet Urn

Your pet held a unique an irreplaceable place in your life, and his or her final resting place should reflect that significance. Below are a few factors to consider as you make one of the most important decisions for your pet.

  • Size of the pet urn. Although this is a practical consideration, the size of an urn is an important factor in choosing the final resting place of your pet. In most cases, every pound will require 1 cubic inches of space. If you are unsure about which size to choose, remember that it is better to have too much space, as some owners choose to place other remembrances of their pets, such as a collar or favorite toy, in the urn.
  • Material of the pet urn. Although traditional pet urns were made of clay, owners can now choose from a variety of materials, including wood, cloisonné, metal, and marble. For a more personalized memorial, many pet crematories also offer owners the ability to engrave their pet urns.
  • Scattering pet urns. A scattering pet urn is one which allows owners to disperse their pet’s ashes in a final resting place. Scattering ashes in a place of personal significance, such as a tranquil river or favorite park, can be a cathartic way of saying goodbye to a pet.
